🖤 GEAR POST-MORTEM #042: The "Waterproof" Map
Date: June 14, 2006 | Status: Liquidated | Cause of Death: 100% Humidity & Irony
It promised to survive the elements. It lied.
The Mission: Provide navigational assistance during the Great Finger Lakes Trek.
The Incident: The manufacturer proudly stamped "100% WATERPROOF & TEAR-RESISTANT" in bold, neon letters on the cover. Taking this as a challenge, Nature introduced a brief 4-minute misting rain. The map was safely tucked inside a backpack side pocket—or so we thought.
The Fatal Wound: Atmospheric moisture apparently bypassed the exterior entirely, transforming the map into a structural consistency resembling wet paper towel. When opened to check a crossroads, the map immediately severed into three distinct, unhelpful pieces along the fold lines.
The Aftermath: The map is now a permanent papier-mâché fixture fused to the bottom of the backpack. We navigated the rest of the trail by guessing where the sun was.
Danger Girl Verdict: "Tear-resistant" apparently only applies if you don't cry on it when you realize you're lost.
