Episode 1: The Great Bird Feeder Extortion
The morning sun was barely hitting the porch when the Whisker Network brought in the tip. It was Barnaby, a field mouse with a twitchy nose and a talent for hiding in crawlspaces.
"Gracie," Barnaby wheezed, catching his breath behind the hydrangeas. "It’s the Acorn Crew. They’ve gone too far this time. They didn't just raid the bird feeders at Number 42. They confiscated them. Told the blue jays if they want a single sunflower seed, they gotta pay a tax in shiny tin foil."
Gracie narrowed her eyes, her tail flicking with rhythmic irritation. This was her turf. A neighborhood without songbirds was a neighborhood without atmosphere.
"We need leverage," Gracie purred, her voice low. "And I know just the trash heap to find it."
Ten minutes later, Gracie was sitting at the base of the big green dumpster behind the local market. A masked, furry face popped over the rim, clutching a half-eaten bagel.
"Hey! Whaddya want, Gracie? I’m eating here! It’s an intimate breakfast for one, alright?" trash panda Joe barked, his voice sounding like he had gargled with nails for breakfast.
"I need info on the squirrels, Joe. They're shaking down the local aviaries."
Joe snorted, wiping cream cheese from his whiskers. "Oh, the tree-rats? They’re getting ambitious. Word on the street—and by street, I mean the compost bin—is they’re caching something big. Something electronic. But hey, talk ain't cheap. I smell turkey bacon on your breath. Give up the goods, or I walk."
Gracie sighed, nudging the leftover piece of bacon she’d smuggled out of the kitchen toward the dumpster. Joe snatched it up, eyes widening. "Alright, alright. Listen. They’ve been hanging out by the old telephone pole near the Erie Canal. They’re chewing through some thick black cables. Don't ask me why. Maybe they're building a bomb, maybe they're just jerks. Now beat it, I gotta digest."
The canal. That meant entering the docks.
Gracie sprinted down the towpath, her paws kicking up dust, Barnaby riding shotgun in her collar. But as she approached the designated telephone pole, a shadow fell over her. Three squirrels—one with a notched ear and a seriously twitchy eye—dropped down from the oak tree, blocking her path.
"Well, well. Look who hopped out of the litter box," Notched-Ear chattered, cracking his knuckles. "You're a long way from your porch, princess."
Gracie braced herself, flattening her ears. She was outnumbered, and squirrels on a sugar high from premium birdseed were unpredictable.
"I'm giving you one warning," Gracie growled. "Return the feeders, or things get messy."
"Oh yeah? You and what army?"
"How about me and the canal current?" a rough, gravelly voice echoed from the shadows of the museum entrance.
Out stepped Cosmo. His ginger fur was scarred, one ear was split, and he had the swagger of a cat who had survived three winters on a diet of pure grit and museum mice. He didn't look happy.
"Cosmo," Gracie breathed, a mix of relief and slight annoyance that she needed backup.
"Gracie, you got a magnet for trouble, you know that?" Cosmo grumbled, stepping up beside her. He looked at the three squirrels, baring a set of sharp, yellow teeth. "You boys want to see how fast I can skin a tail? Because I've had a really boring morning, and I'd love the exercise."
The squirrels looked at each other. They could handle a pampered house cat, but an Erie Canal mouser with nothing to lose? That was a bad business decision.
With a chorus of angry chattering, the gang scrambled up the bark and vanished into the canopy, dropping a stolen gold watch and a bundle of chewed copper wire in their haste.
Cosmo looked down at the pile of junk, then at Gracie, letting out a heavy sigh. "A gold watch? What are these rodents running, a pawn shop? Come on, Danger Kitty. Let's get this back to the birds before you find a way to get us both arrested by the dog catcher."
Gracie smirked, her tail held high as they trotted back toward safety. The neighborhood was safe for another day, but she knew the Acorn Crew wouldn't stay down for long.
