The Whisker Files: Case #043 – The Midsummer Night’s Garbage Heist
The humidity was thick enough to chew on, and the fireflies were out, but Gracie wasn't relaxing. She was perched on the edge of the tool shed, staring across the lawn of Backyard Nine.
"Look at her," Joe the raccoon wheezed, sitting next to her and wiping sweat from his masked face with a greasy paw. "It’s a fortress, Gracie. Alcatraz with a patio. But inside that green plastic vault at the center of the yard... is the Holy Grail. A whole, discarded lemon-herb rotisserie chicken. The human only ate the breasts, Gracie! The drumsticks are intact! Intact!"
Gracie looked down at the target. The humans at Number 42 had recently bought a heavy-duty trash can with a reinforced lid and a literal combination padlock to keep Joe out.
"I can crack the padlock, Joe," Gracie whispered, her eyes scanning the moonlit grass. "But we have a bigger problem. The alarm system."
Right on cue, a tiny, high-pitched yawn echoed from the screened-in porch. Emerging into the moonlight was the Beast of Backyard Nine.
Her name is Cocoa but around the neighborhood she was known as "Loco". She is a three-pound Chihuahua with bug-eyes, a rhinestone collar, and a nervous system fueled entirely by unadulterated rage. She didn't sleep. She didn't think. She just vibrated at a frequency of pure hostility, waiting for something to breathe in her general direction so she could alert the entire tri-county area.
"She’s a psycho, Gracie," Joe hissed, clutching his chest. "Last week I just dropped a harmless banana peel on the deck, and she looked at me like she wanted to wear my skin as a coat. I’m an emotional guy, I don't need that kind of negativity in my life."
"Relax, Joe. I brought the specialist," Gracie purred.
From the shadows of the fence jumped Cosmo. He landed without a sound, carrying a small, crinkly plastic bag in his mouth. He dropped it at Gracie’s paws.
"What's the play, Danger Kitty?" Cosmo grumbled, looking at the tiny dog. "You want me to take out the squeak-toy? Because I've met rats in the canal museum bigger than that thing."
"No violence, Cosmo. If Cocoa barks, the floodlights come on, and the humans come out with the broom. We need a distraction. What’s in the bag?"
"A premium, half-stale, fast-food french fry," Cosmo said proudly. "Found it by the boat launch. It’s got a high salt-to-grease ratio. If anything can lure a porch-gremlin away from her post, it's this."
Gracie nodded. "Perfect. Cosmo, you deploy the bait on the far side of the deck. Barnaby, you and the mice are on wheel-duty. Joe, you’re the muscle. Once that lock clicks, we have ninety seconds before the human's motion-sensor lights reset. Move!"
Cosmo vanished into the shadows, creeping toward the left side of the porch. With expert precision, he flicked the stale french fry across the wooden slats.
Clack.
Cocoa’s oversized ears instantly flipped forward. She froze, her entire three-pound body trembling. She sniffed the air. The scent of trans fats.
For a split second, the Beast’s programming glitched. The urge to consume a human delicacy briefly overrode the urge to destroy all local wildlife. She hopped off her lawn chair and trotted suspiciously toward the fry.
"Go, go, go!" Gracie whispered.
Gracie and Joe sprinted across the lawn, keeping low to avoid the motion-activated floodlights. Barnaby and three field mice scampered behind them, carrying a tiny twig to use as a lever.
They reached the green vault. Gracie leaped onto the lid, landing perfectly on top of the padlock. She slid her claws into the dial. Click. Whir. Snap. Her lock-picking skills, honed from opening pantry doors, didn't fail her. The heavy padlock fell open.
"I’m in! Joe, heave!" Gracie hissed.
Joe grabbed the edge of the heavy lid, his face turning purple as he lifted. "Oh, the humanity! It’s heavy! My lumbar! I’m throwing my back out for poultry, Gracie!"
Down on the deck, Cocoa finished the french fry. She licked her jowls, realized she had been bought off, and turned her giant, bulbous eyes right toward the trash can. She let out a low, vibrating growl that sounded like a broken espresso machine.
"She spotted us!" Barnaby squeaked from the grass.
Cocoa inhaled deeply, preparing to unleash a bark that would wake the dead.
"Not today, tiny dancer," Cosmo’s voice echoed from the roof of the porch.
Cosmo intentionally batted a heavy, empty terracotta flowerpot off the ledge. It shattered on the patio stones with a massive CRASH right behind Cocoa.
The Beast went completely airborne, flipping backwards in a panic, utterly startled by the sudden noise. Instead of barking at the intruders, she let out a high-pitched yip and bolted back through the doggy door, burying herself under the couch cushions inside.
"The prize is secured!" Joe yelled, emerging from the depths of the trash can like a twisted magician, holding the glistening rotisserie chicken carcass above his head.
"Floodlights!" Gracie shouted as a click echoed from the house.
The yard illuminated like a football stadium, but the crew was already gone. They scrambled under the gap in the fence just as the human pushed open the back door, shouting, "Cocoa? Did you break another pot?!"
Later that night, safe beneath the floorboards of the Erie Canal Museum, the crew celebrated.
Joe was practically crying tears of joy, happily gnawing on a chicken wing. "Gracie, Cosmo, you guys are artists. True professionals. If I ever find a discarded pizza box with the stuffed crust, it’s yours. Word of honor."
Cosmo leaned back against a wooden beam, casually grooming his shoulder. "Just keep the information flowing, Joe. Next time the squirrels try to wire-tap the cable lines, we want to hear about it first."
Gracie smiled, looking out at the moonlight reflecting off the canal water. The Beast of Backyard Nine had been defeated, the trash panda was fed, and the Danger Kitty’s record remained completely spotless.
